Okay so I miserably failed with the 30 day blog challenge.. i just can't do it. Ibang iba na talaga unlike before I had so much time to blog about almost anything and everything.. while now even if I keep reminding myself the daily blog challenge I just don't have time to do it.. so enough of the challenge LOL!
So what made me really busy? Hmm you see I am a full time working regular employee + trying hard to be hands on mommy + dedicated wife. So really its work and my family which really keeps me busy and I think thats normal naman diba? Being the doting mother and DIY addict that I am .. I have decided to make my daughter's UN Culmination costume as early as now.. I made her a Hula Skirt to represent Hawaii or French Polynesia (whichever).. hula skirt, pompons, garlands and flower crown is done. I just have to make the sash and the flag. UN Culmination is celebrated every October right? And in Missha's school culmination activity is every Friday of the month but I pressured myself to do it and finish it as early as now because Missha's 2nd Periodic Exams are scheduled middle of October and I want to be able to focus in reviewing with her.. reason why I made sure that even before the exam week the planned DIY UN costume is done and out of the way.
I would like to share with you my latest DIY project made with soooo much love and passion hehe.. my daughter's HULA SKIRT ♥ ♥ ♥

DIY Hula Skirt ♥
Voila ♥ I feel so accomplished and happy looking at it.. my labor of love..
It took me 2 1/2 days to put it all together.. how? here's what I did.
First, I searched online for hula skirt inspirations and saw tons on pinterest and google images. After I found that inspiration I used my imagination and creativity to decide on which colors I will be using and settled with Yellow and Orange (since she had a bikini top with the same colors to match with). Once the idea was all set in my mind off I went to stores to get the materials needed.
Materials:
1. Duraflex Twine - bought in Gaisano Country Mall. Picked color yellow (43.00 per big roll). Bought 4 rolls but only used 2 1/2 rolls.
2. Elastic Band - bought the 1/2 thick (6.50 per meter). Bought one meter but used only half.
3. Thread and Needle. - Yellow thread (7.00 per small roll) Needle (1.00 from local store).
4. Artificial Flowers- Yellow and Orange color combination for the Hula Skirt waist. (39.00 per stem with 5 flowers in Unitop Store)
5. Artifical Flowers - Assorted colors for the garland. (50.00 for pack of 30 flowers)
6. Small Artificial Flowers - Yellow and Orange color combination for the flower crown (69.00 from Gaisano Country Mall)
7. Brush or comb.
These are the things that I used in making the skirt and how this is how I pulled it together:
Cut the duraflex twines with the correct length.
get the correct waist measurement of the garter
and keep in mind a little extra for allowance.
Once this is all set use a chair for the garter ensure that the chair is not too big and make the garter all loosen up.. ensure that the measurement of the garter is ok. Then attach the twines to the garter using the cow hitch knot. Once the twines are knotted to the elastic band completely use a brush or comb and comb the twines to make it look nicer, fluffler and finer. Now the reason why i used a thicker elastic band is because it looks nicer with the cow hitch knot and it's also flatter meaning - its more comfortable to wear.
Once the skirt is done it's time to accessorize it. Bring on the flowers and start arranging them nicely on the waist part of the skirt and secure it by sewing it. Use variations of flowers to make it nicer and put the flowers on the front and back waist part of the skirt to make it look neat and nice front and back. Once done voila.. you have your DIY Hula skirt.
For the garland and the flower crown you just want to put them together and make it nice and that's it. I also made little pompoms for my daughter to complete the ensemble. For the pompoms I used the same method except I used an orange ribbon instead of an elastic band..
flower crown and hawaiian garland ♥
I am so proud of myself for having done these costume and pieces for Missha.. to be honest I cant wait to see my baby in school wearing my creation hehe...
Mommy's I hope I was able to give you an idea on how to make a hula skirt for your little one.. not only is is more practical, but more creative and unique as well and I am sure with lots of love into your work your baby will stand out ♥
